A new study published in the *Journal of Hazardous Materials* reveals that a significant portion of radioactive fallout during the Fukushima Daiichi disaster was caused by a single release event involving cesium-rich microparticles (CsMPs). Unlike soluble cesium that binds to soil, these tiny, highly radioactive particles were transported across the region by a specific gust of wind and deposited in patterns heavily influenced by rainfall. Because CsMPs can deliver intense, localized radiation doses if inhaled or ingested, researchers emphasize that understanding their unique dispersion behavior is critical for accurate long-term environmental risk assessments and effective remediation efforts.
